B Grade succumb to Brighton -  Tuesday 15th March

Our B Grade side took on top side Brighton at their home ground on the weekend. Batting first on the Saturday, we were in deep trouble at 6/63 but some steady batting batting saw us bat out the 80 overs and end up with a semi respectable score of 138. Top scorer was Pete Butcher with 27. Defending the runs the following day was always going to be a tough ask, but hopes of an unlikely victory were strengthened when we had Brighton 6 down for 60 odd. It wasn't to be however, and in the end, Brighton finished with a comfortable victory, hitting the winnings runs in the 57th over with three wickets to spare. A full card of the match can be seen here.

The guys should be congratulated on making the finals, a great effort in itself. A summary of the results can be found here.

D's go down in thriller - Tuesday 15th March

Saturdays game at the Valley was a nail biter. Batting first at the valley, the home side struggled early to be 7 for 70 odd, before Lairdy and Kiwi came together at the end for a 70 run partnership to push the score past 150. Kiwi top scored with 49 (denying himself his first 50 for the club again) with the final score ending up at 9/151 from 40 overs.  This score wasn't quite what we had hoped for, but it was enough to be competitive. With the ball, the Valleys started well with Kiwi taking a wicket in the first over thanks to a great catch in the cordon by Fitzy . Wickets fell consistently throughout the innings as the visitors pushed towards our 151. Jimmy 'Habajan' Harney came on late in the innings, and bowled very tight and then took and absolute hanger of a catch off his own bowling when one was hit back at him, and at this point it was game on. It went right down to the wire, and with a single over to play, the visitors needed 5 runs to secure victory while we needed just one wicket. Pickles was chosen to bowl the last over, following his great first spell of bowling earlier in the innings. The first ball saw two runs stolen, leaving the equation at 3 runs for victory. Unfortunately the next ball slipped from his hand and went past the batter at head height for a no ball and beat the keeper too. The batters scrambled for a quick single and then turned and came sprinting home for the winnings run. A good throw from the deep saw the bails removed as the batter slid home, which was followed by a huge appeal from the whole team (and all the spectators)! Unfortunately the appeal was turned down by the umpire, ensuring the closest of victories for the visitors. For the home side, it was a disappointing end to a great game of cricket, and indeed a great season for them, only loosing two games for the entire season. Despite the loss, the D grade have done enough to earn themselves a promotion to LOC grade next season.

Well done guys! The full card for the match can be found here, and summary of these results can be found here.

Round 11 Round Up - B grade joins the D's in getting some finals action! Monday 7th March

Well... it's not exactly the world cup, but the end of round 11 did mark the end of the minor rounds for season 2004/05, and after the completion of all the minor rounds, we have 2 teams who will be seeing some finals action. Both the Bs and the Ds have gotten through!

Our B grade have scraped in to be 4th overall while the D grade, despite being washed out this week, have finished 'minor premiers' having lost just one game for the season. The C grade missed out by one spot finishing 5th, while the A grade looks to be going down to A3 after finishing the season second bottom.

I believe the B grade are playing top placed Brighton at Brighton (who defeated us back in round 4) on Saturday / Sunday 12th-13th March, and the D grade will host a home final against P.A.O.C (who we beat by two runs in round 11) at the Valley on Saturday 12th, but watch this space for confirmed details as they come to hand. Final tables for the season are on the ATCA website here, and the details of the finals structure (1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd) can be seen here.

Anyway, more on that later, for now here is the results and details on the final round of minor round matches for season 2004/05..

The A grade took on our local rivals Modbury at the Valley. The game was of great importance to both sides with Modbury needing an outright victory to ensure a spot the top four, and us needing an outright victory to save ourselves from relegation to A3. This meant that having the game go to full distance of two innings a piece was on the cards from the outset. Bowling first, our home side dismissed the visitors in the 45th over after they had posted a healthy 194 runs in quick fashion. Scott McInnes was best with the ball, taking 5/38 from his 9.3 overs, while Blake took 3 of his 7 wickets for the match for just 26 runs from 13 overs. Batting in reply the same day, our home side finished up at 4/86 after the 29 bonus overs, with Macca not out on 21 and Scott McInnes unbeaten on 18. Through the week, rain threatened to stop the final days play, and play was delayed but eventually started at 2pm. The deck was soft in areas on hard in others making it a very difficult pitch to bat on, with some spectators being heard to say that 'there were two pitches out there'. Macca was the first victim of the popping deck, going early before a revival by Nick O'Dell and Scott McInnes saw our run rate raised. Eventually the wicket took it's toll and were dismissed for 140 from 50 overs, which was essentially the final nail in the relegation coffin. Modbury then batted again looking to take an outright win, but struggled on the tough wicket thanks to some excellent bowling from strike bowler Blake, who took another 4 wickets to finish with 7 for the match and 30 for the season. After Modbury declared their innings at 9/103, the home side batted for second time and pushed on well and avoided the outright defeat to be 5/119 at the close of play. Blake hit 38 while Nick O'Dell finished unbeaten on 29. The full card can be seen here.

The B Grade took on P.A.O.C at the home ground. P.A.O.Cbatted first last week and were again looking for an outright victory, when they declared their first innings at 9/180 from 62 overs. Using the bonus overs, the valleys did well to be 1/24 at the close of the first days play, with Barty being unbeaten on 13 and Scott Dobson not out 1. The following week, the valleys did extremely well to bat all day and take the win thanks to Michael Bartons 63, who had great support from David Reid (53) and a handy 33 from Joe Gallina. The valleys finished up at 7/229 which i am told is enough to see them jump to fourth place and get some finals action! The card for the game is here.

The C grade has a disappointing game, being bowled out for 60 in the first innings at Hooper oval, in a game they really needed to win to see some finals. Walkerville were 5/150 at the end of the first days play ensuring a victory. The next week, Walkerville were bowled out for 204 and we batted again. In the 2nd innings, Grant Bowen did well hitting 51 which is his first 50 for the club, and Richie hit 20 before being stumped. The game finished with the Valleys at 7/118 from 49 overs, denying Walkerville an outright victory, but it was a disappointing end to an otherwise good comeback to the season. The full (updated) card can be seen here.

The final D grade game at St Pauls was washed out this week. Last week however, the Ds took on C.B.C.O.C at St Pauls, and won a cliff hanger by 3 runs, thanks mainly to Beinke's 63 runs which included 3 sixes. Beinke also did well to take 3 wickets. The full card for this game can be found here.

A summary of these results can be found here

2004/05 Statistics are in!

OK all the stats are in for season 2004/05! Im not sure if the final tally of season stats will include matches played in the finals (Bs and Ds) or not, but if you play A grade or C Grade, then these are definitely your final stats for the year.

Using these statistics you can work out who will take home the various Trophies and runner up trophies for at the end of year presentation.

A Grade Season 2004/05

B Grade Season 2004/05

C Grade Season 2004/05 - (*Note, at these C grade stage these stats are missing the first innings of the last game. Since Adam Ellershaw hit 29 in this first innings, he moves ahead of Aza and Gomer, and should therefore take out the batting trophy.)

Port Districts pitch gets dug up! Monday 7th March

The final round of the competition saw an ugly incident at Port Districts who had their pitch completely dug up on the Friday night before the second days play. Not only was the prepared pitch dug up, but the other wickets still being prepared as well. Read about the 'gutless act' on the ATCA website here.

Round 10 Round Up Monday 21st February

A overcast day on Saturday saw the completion of the round 10 matches. There was no round update between innings this week, (sorry I've been busy) so here is a full roundup of each game played this round.

A summary of all results for this round can be found here, or read below for a write up and links to the full game cards (thanks to Jeff).

The A grade side took on Woody South at Ledger reserve and was this week captained by Blake Appleby in Scott McInnes' absence. Scott Dobson was selected to play his first A grade game this week. Batting first for a change, we managed to hit 226 from 78.1 overs. Best with the bat were Andrew Murray (31), Simon McPhee (57) and Heath Weber (48). Speaking with some of the players after the game, despite amassing a reasonable score, some thoughts were that we might need a few more than our 226 and unfortunately this turned out to be the case. In reply, Woodville South finished the day at 4/278 from their 80 overs, with two batters walking off the ground with unbeaten centuries. The bowling was shared around with everyone bar Barty and keeper Nick O'Dell getting a roll at some point (yes that means Bear got an over). The loss all but ensures the relegation of our A grade side to A3 next season. Full card is available here

Our B Grade side on the other hand, had a good win over Walkerville at the Valley. Batting first last week, our home side clawed their way to 173 before being bowled out. Most batters got a start but no one really went on with the job. Murray Riddle hit 37 opening the batting, with Robbie Medlow getting 32 at first drop. Pete Butcher batted well at number 10 hitting 23. In reply, there must have been some life in the valley deck as 20 wickets fell during the day! Fortunately we had the runs on the board already and Walkerville were rolled for 103 from 50 overs. Pete Butcher took 4 wickets for 33, while Leigh Crowhurst also bowled superbly to take 3 for just 17 run from his 12 overs. Brett Madigan was also excellent taking 2 for 18 from his 12 overs. After bowling out Walkerville, we had another hit and it's suffice to say there isn't much to write about. The second innings saw us be bowled out for 59 with Murray Riddle's 14 the top score. At the end of the day however, we took home the points! See the game card here.

The C grade game was played at St Pauls against Elders USA. Aaron won the toss and elected to bowl first. We didn't get off to a great start when I broke down with a hamstring strain in my second over, but the guys put in a great effort right throughout the day. Luke Radan played in his first senior game after impressing all season in the 15s side, and wasted no time in impressing us all with his bowling, taking a casual 4 wickets. Grant Bowen also bowled well taking another 4  wickets (assisted by some great reflex catching by an injured bowler at first slip heheh..). Scott Anderson and Travis Rio also bowled well taking a wicket each. After bowling Elders out for 149 from 44 overs, we had a late afternoon hit and started poorly with the loss of 4 quick wickets, and finished off the day at 4-58 and with myself in the unfamiliar position of being unbeaten on 31. The following week, the team set about the task of chasing down the remaining runs, (while I set about the task of securing my maiden half century). I am very happy to say that both the team and myself were successful. A 75 run stand between myself and Scott Dykstra (45) saw us get within a few runs of victory before I was dismissed for 67. Soon afterwards, the winning runs were in the bag. After the win however, no one expected that Adam Ellershaw and Travis Rio would continue the batting performance in the way they did. Travis hit 35 while Adam smashed his way to 84 to see our home side crush the opposition by doubling the 149 runs they hit in the first innings! It was indeed a great game for the C grade side. If you don't believe me, check out the card for yourself!

The LOD grade side has continued it's brilliant season with another two victories in its two 50 over matches. The first game was played at CBOC at their home ground. The batting was highlighted by three individual performances with Jimmy Harney hitting 78,  Pfitzy hitting a great 84 and Beinke chiming in with 36. After 40 overs the team had hit a formidable 245 for the loss of 7 wickets. In reply, CBOC did quite well but couldn't get over the line, getting to 208 for the loss of 9 wickets after their 40 overs. See the full card here.

The next LOD game (round 16) was played at Collins reserve against Fullham. The home side were bowled out for 146 thanks in part to 4 wickets by Pfitzy which cost him just 21 runs. The batting was again highlighted by another great performance by Jimmy Harney who cant do much wrong at the moment. Jimmy hit 68 to take his total D grade runs for the year to 341 at an average of 42. Lairdy also hit 20 to help take he Valleys past Fullhams score in the 38th over. The full card can be seen here.

A summary of all the results can be found here.

Jeff gives us some new stats to ponder over! Wednesday 9th Feb

Our club statistician Jeff Wishart has been busy compiling some new stats for us. We now have the record partnerships for each wicket for A grade, B Grade, C Grade and D Grade.

A catching summary (As,Bs,Cs),  plus a new 'Duck Cup' , (which I'm pleased to say is currently being comfortably led by my mate Heath Weber) are also available on the statistics page.

Round 9 Round Up Tuesday 8th February

Round 9 was completed on Saturday with the fortnightly presentations being held at the Highbury. There were mixed feeling at the presentation with some disappointing losses mixed in with an exceptional individual performance. Summary of this rounds results can be found here.

In the A grade game being played at Scotch College, the Valley were defending the 218 runs made in the previous week. . At one point we had the home team 8 for 160 odd, and needing just two wickets with 50 odd runs required, we felt we were a big chance, but it wasn't to be and Scotch got past our score with a few overs to spare. The final two wickets eventually came in successive balls once Scotch had 20 or so runs on us, showing just how close we were to taking home a win. It was a hard fought game with everyone giving 100% right throughout the day, but in the end it wasn't quite enough and we had to stomach an agonising defeat in a game that we really wanted to win. A positive to take from the game was the fact that we played to our team plan of batting 80 overs and taking 10 wickets. Best with the ball was Simon McPhee who bowled his heart out for 24 overs taking 3 for 46, and Blake Appleby who grabbed three early wickets. Michael Barton was awarded man of the match for his persistent innings that held the top order together last week. The full score card can be seen here.

The B Grade took on top side Payneham at home in a rain affected 50 over one day match. Batting first, the home side lost early wickets and looked in real trouble at 7/69 before a late order  partnership between David 'rowdy' Reid and Brett Maddigan saw the home side claw to a 142 before being bowled out. In reply the home side bowled well, but just didn't have enough runs on the board to defend. Troy Chapman was best with the ball taking 4 for 38 off his 10 overs. A fast and furious 4 over second innings saw us hit 2/47 with Brett Madigan again getting amognst the runs, with a quick fire 27. Bretty was awarded man of the match for his batting performance. This game's full score card is here

In the C Grade, we took on Payneham at St Pauls, and our home side set about the task of chasing down the 234 runs made the week earlier. At 2/24 it wasn't the ideal start, but enter Mr Simon 'Gomer' Eshmade! Gomer single handedly took control of the match, and proceeded to knock the ball around the ground, while casually walking many of his runs, much to the frustration of the Payneham fielding side. His innings included 2 sixes and 18 boundaries and at the end of the day was left unbeaten on 124! Needless to say, the C grade took home another emphatic victory to continue their great comeback to their season. Full score card is here.

Out LOD side took on Penfield at Argana park and has come home with yet another victory. Batting first we hit 9/142 from our 40 overs and restricted Penfield to 9/125 from theirs. Best with the batt were Matt Shurven who hit 35 and Doug Colman who hit 32. Kiwi took 3 wickets with the ball. Full score card is here.

Summary of this rounds results can be found here.

Valleys go down in 20/20 game Tuesday 1st February

The Valley Demons run in the 20/20 knock out competition has come to an end, going down to the Woodville Rechabites at Goodowood oval on Sunday. The Valleys batted first, and posted 9/131 but the Rechabites were too strong in reply and smashed their way to a victory with time and 5 wickets to spare. To rub salt in to the wound Heath Weber pulled a hamstring running between wickets. In the second game, A2 side Walkerville defeated reigning A1 Premiers RCP when a regulation catch was dropped with 2 balls remaning. Read about this and also how the Grange A1 side was knocked also out by another A2 team here.

Round 9 Update Tuesday 1st February

A quick update on the round 9 matches still in progress..

The A grade side is playing Scotch College on their beautiful oval, surrounded by a white picket fence. After loosing the toss, and being sent in to bat we again lost early wickets, but a late revival partnership by Scott McInnes and Blake Appleby (plus a 5 'all run' by yours truly) saw us claw to a respectable 218 from our 80 overs.

The B Grade game was washed out, and a 50 game is scheduled at the Valley for next week.

In C grade game (besides the Bs sinking a few cans watching the game, especially Murray Riddle who put on quite a show back at the club afterwards) we bowled first at St Pauls with Payneham hitting 200+.

The D grade had yet another win hitting 145 and bowling out the opposition for 120 odd.

Statistics updated Thursday 27th January

All player statistics are now up to date as of round 8. A Grade, B Grade, C Crade and D Grade are available on the stats page.

Round 8 Roundup Tuesday 25th January

Round 8 was not a good round for the club, with 3 of our 4 sides going down in a round of one day matches.

The A grade side took on Marion at home. Scotty continued his bad form at the toss and we were sent in to field first again. Marion batted well despite some early tight bowling and ended up hitting 245 on a cracker of a deck at the valley. In reply, there was really only one standout performance, with Heath Weber (pictured below) opening the batting and answering his critics by hitting 88 off as many balls. Once he got going, it was a typical Heath innings, with many lofty blows and a typical dismissal too, being caught in the deep trying to hit another zak. Besides Heaths innings however, our  batting left a lot to be  desired, with Nick  Sideris' A grade debut score of 18 being the next highest score besides sundries. The score card is available here.

The B grade traveled down south to take on Marion on their home turf. It wasn't a good day for the guys, coming home with a disappointing loss. The score card for this match is available here.

The C grade also went down in their game against Adelaide H.O.S despite an unbeaten 65 from Leigh Crowhurst. The full card for this match is available here.

On a lighter note, our D grade side continued their fine form, coming home with yet another victory. Jimmy Harney had a cracker of a game, hitting 72 runs, then taking 6 wickets with the ball. Apparently he also took a hanger in the field, leaving Kev with no choice but to award him the coaches award for the round. Notably, Kev also played in this game, taking his first wicket for quite a while I imagine. Full card is available here.

Heath prepares to smack the bowler back over his head on his way to 88 off 88 balls at the Valley.

Round 7 Roundup Monday 24th January

Apologies for the delay in posting the round 7 results. All score cards now available.

The A grade had a disappointing loss on a deck and outfield that seemed to change dramatically from one week to the next. Gepps cross managed to hit 304 in their first innings for the loss of just 4 wickets, while in reply the following weekend, we were dismissed for just 73 and were then surprisingly asked to bowl. The difference in the deck and outfield were highlighted by the fact that we managed to take 9 wickets in this session, a far cry from the week before. Blake was awesome with the ball in the second innings, taking 5 wickets which left everyone to ponder what would have happened had we batted first, but as they say, hindsight is a great thing. The full score is available here.

The B grade had a great game by contrast, winning outright against Adelaide High O.S. Scott Dobson top scored with 60 runs and also took 9 wickets for the match to deservedly claim man of the match honours. Combined with his 20/20 performance, Scott is definitely in a purple patch at the moment! A full score card can be found here.

Our C Grade side also had a good win, knocking off Flinders park at St Pauls. Craig (Guinness) Bettison gave our selectors something to think about, hitting 90 runs late in the innings to ensure we had a good first innings score. Mike Gaskin also hit 58 and took 6 wickets with the ball to narrowly knock Bett off for man of the match honours. A full score card is available here.

The D grade won their round 11 game, knocking off PAOC at Victoria Park. The score card can be found here.

The LOD side also had a win in their round 10 game, pummeling Pooraka by 173 runs on their home ground. Shurvs hit 67 while Bienke well supported him hitting 45. The Harney brothers also chimed in with Jimmy hitting 38, while his brother Andy hit 28. Kiwi took a casual 4 wickets to assist in dismissing the home side for 61 in just 16.4 overs. The score card can be found here.

Valley Demons March On in Turf 20's knockout comp! Tuesday 12th January

Our Valley Demons have won their second round match in this seasons knockout competition. On Sunday, we took on the Adelaide Uni Blacks at Pooraka, won the toss, batted first and  after 20 fast and furious overs, we amassed a score of 144 for the loss of 7 wickets. Best with the bat were Macca (20), Dobson (20), O'Dell (22) and Nick Sideris (pictured below) who ended up unbeaten on 27. The run chase was tight right until then end, with the Uni Blacks eventually falling 14 runs short after their allocated 20 overs. Scott Dobson continued his good run of form, bowling very well to grab 4 wickets to add to his handy runs in the match. Nick O'Dell reminded us all how good he can be behind the stumps taking one screamer of a catch and then later throwing down the stumps to snare an unlikely stumping opportunity.  The game was a good, tight encounter, right until then end, and we all enjoyed helping Rich Mellors' out, singing the club song in the change rooms after the game!

Nick Sideris clips one off his toes on his way to 27 not out, in Sundays knockout match win.

Luke Radan hits 104 (not out) in the under 15's!

The club is very pleased to announce that Luke Radan hit 104 not out against Modbury on Sunday! His excellent achievement helped us  bring home a win against Modbury, with the final scores, Hope Valley 8/198 defeating Modbury all out for 141. Well done Luke on a fantastic achievement. We can wait to get you in to our senior squad in years to come!

If anyone would like to submit our U/15 scores to me, i'll be more than happy to put them up for all see! Just email me.

Round 6 Roundup - Monday 20th  December

Saturday just gone saw both the start and completion of round 6, with a one day limited overs match being played across all grades due to Christmas falling on Saturday next week. It's fair to say that it was stinking hot on Saturday, it was so dry i could barely get any spit to shine the ball so I'm sure most other players would have felt the heat during day too!

The A grade hosted Ingle Farm at the Valley, and with the deck looking superb it looked a batters paradise. However, even with the special 20c coin i gave Scooter (which he never gave back) he still couldn't win the toss and we were predictably sent in to field first. The visitors started well with a good opening partnership to the drinks break. The second session was a different story with a number of wickets falling and their run rate cut right back thanks to some tight bowling by Macca and Scooter. Somehow Scooter managed to bowl his overs straight through in the stifling heat and bowled one of the best spells I've seen him bowl, going for just 24 off his 10. Blake was his usual consistent self, bowling well despite copping some stick late in the innings, ending up with 3 wickets. Overall it was a satisfying effort in the field and we thought we had done well to restrict the visitors to 8/219 from their allocated overs. The run chase, I'm sorry to say, was a different story. Wickets fell at regular intervals leaving us at 3/45 then 7/66 thanks to 3 wickets falling in a single over. The tail wagged a bit, but by this stage the run rate seemed out of reach and we were finally dismissed in the 28th over for a disappointing 146. To see the full score card for this game, click here.

The B grade this week, was a different story bringing home a very welcome victory. Batting first, they made 216 thanks mainly to a 130 run opening stand between Andrew Murray (76) and Danny Llewellyn (56). Both the opening batters were in need of some runs and the return to form was no doubt very pleasing. Bretty Madigan chipped in with an unbeaten 28.  In reply,  the bowlers did the job with Leigh Crowhurst going for just 11 off his 10 overs! (and collecting 2 wickets along the way). Pete Butcher kept his wicket tally growing snaring 4 scalps for just 21 runs on the way to bowling out Flinders Park for 176. All in all a great day for the Bs, who deserve a lot of praise for coming back from last weeks disappointing.  performance. Well done guys!

The C grade extended their winning streak to two in a row this week, knocking off Ingle Farm by 50 odd runs. I haven't heard of any individual performances so far. If you know of any, then email me!

Finally, I'm sad to inform that the D grades unbeaten winning streak has finally come to an end. Our LOD side narrowly went down to United Districts, losing by 2 wickets in a close encouonter.

Round 5 Roundup- 3 out of 4 ain't bad. The Valleys fight back! - Monday 13th December

I'm sure the bad weather put doubts in many-a-mind throughout the week, but in the end the rain stayed away, allowing all games to be completed without issue. It was a good thing too, with 3 out of our 4 sides coming home victorious!

The A grade made the long pilgrimage down Grand Junction road to defend their 267 runs against Port Districts at Largs Bay, and started the day the best in the best possible fashion with a wicket on the first ball of the days play! Another wicket in the third over put us in a great position and we had the home side two for not many. Despite the energy sapping, humid conditions, wickets fell consistently throughout the first two sessions thanks to some good 'ol line and length bowling mixed in with some good catching, and at the tea break we had 7 scalps, leaving just 3 more left to secure the win. To the home side's credit, their tail wagged a little longer than we would have liked, but our bowlers worked hard, and in the end the remaining wickets fell and we had secured a well deserved and very enjoyable 71 run win over Port Districts.  -  A complete score card for this game (thanks to Jeff) is available here.

The B grade had the task in front of them, chasing 267 against Brighton at the Valley. It wasn't a great day for the Bs, as despite a well made 42 from Jarrod 'welcome back' Hanish, they were rolled for just 103 and were understandably sent in to bat again, as Brighton chased an outright victory. The 2nd innings started off in bad fashion with opener Danny getting a pair for the game, while Jarrod chipped in again with 32, Nick Sideris made 28 and Brett Madigan made up for his first innings duck, hitting 22. In the end the home side managed to save the outright, finishing the day at 8/113. - A complete score card for this game (thanks to Jeff) is available here.

The C grade set about the task of defending their 202 against Unley and in doing so, claimed their first victory of the season! Unley were rolled for just 142 thanks mainly to a 5 wicket haul by Ross 'Maxie' Gibbons. A quick 3/70 in the second innings secured some valuable bonus points, and the C grade should go in to next weeks one day match with confidence. A complete score card for this game (thanks to Jeff) is available here.

Our LOD side has continued its undefeated run, with an 11 run win over PAOC and is now sitting pretty on top of the ladder with 8 straight victories! John Penglis hit a quick fire 45 with Gaskin hitting 32 and Tybo chipping in with 21. I'm sure its also worth mentioning that Kev Russell also had a game for the LODs this week. He hit 11n.o and bowled 4 overs. A complete score card for this game (thanks to Jeff) is available here.

Twenty for you, 20 for me.. Valleys win 1st cup knockout match.. - Monday 6th December

If you weren't aware, the 50 over knockout cup games of previous years, have this year been replaced by a round of 'Twenty 20' games, toted as the 'Turf Twenties' competition by ATCA. Twenty 20 is the new cricket format taking off around the world.  Read about it here, if you want more details.

The Valley hosted two games of the first rounds draw on Sunday 5th December. The first game saw the Modbury Hawks take on the Woody South cats, and the second game saw our Hope Valley Demons take on Torrens Valley. It was a good day in the sun, with the BBQ firing all day (thanks Azza) and beers-a-plenty. In less than 80 overs (total for both games) spectators saw over 600 runs hit and around 40 wickets fall!

The first game saw Modbury make 183, and then manage to hold off Woody south by 20 runs.

In the second game (in which we played), the home side batted first with Heath Weber (15) and Nick O'Dell (42) opening the batting in aggressive fashion. Runs flowed early with the tight field restrictions and the home team got off to a flier. It was an exciting game with a number of huuuge zaks, lots of wickets and plenty of runs. After just 18 quick overs the home side was bowled out for 158 runs, and then set about the task of defending them.

As expected, the visitors came out swinging and made the most of the early field restrictions, with one particular bowler getting absolutely spanked more than his fair share of punishment (i reserve my right not mention names). The home side kept up the pressure however and managed to keep the wickets tumbling, eventually bowling out the visitors 18 shy of their target. Brett Madigan had the figures at the end of the day, with Nick O'Dell best with the wood axe bat. Gomer walked away from the game with a duck under his belt and huge gash (that probably required a stitch or two) on his leg from his spikes. The win ensures we move on to the second round which is January 9th next year.

There is a great write up with results on the first round of this competition on the  ATCA website. Click here to see it.

Round 5 Update - Monday 6th December

It was another glorious day to play cricket on Saturday, and accordingly all games got off without a hitch. The long range weather forecast looks looks grim however, so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed that the weather holds up as all our teams made a good start this week and really deserve to get a chance to finish things off next week...

The A grade were away from home again this week, and traveled down to Largs Bay to take on Port Districts. Newly promoted skipper Blake Appleby  (as Scooter was unavailable this round) won the all important coin toss and had no hesitation in putting the home side in the field. Andrew (Paddy) Harney opened the batting with Michael (welcome back) Barton and initially faced a barrage of sharp and short bowling on a very hard deck. This approach did not phase the two openers however, who steadily piled on runs in a good opening partnership before Barty fell for a well made 36. Bartys demise however brought Simon (Macca) McPhee to the crease, who wasted no time in getting his eye in and proceeded to join Paddy in sending the ball the fence. We're not sure if it had anything to do with his Mum finally getting to see him bat, but if it did she's more than welcome to come again, Mac hit 80 odd to put us in a great position at the tea break! Paddy also continued his run of good form, ending up with 75. Most other batters also chimed in, (except for Blake (skipper) Appleyby who came to crease late in the innings and proceeded to run him self out for a Diamond Duck), and by the end of the day the Valley had 267 on the board.

The B grade took on Brighton at the Valley and were sent in to field. The vistors made around 9/267 on a great batting track, and i am told that the bowling was very good on the day. Leigh Crowhurst put in a great effort bowling 21 overs on a suspect leg, and was well supported by  the other bowlers too. It was a great effort in the field with all six bowlers taking a wicket each. The remaining 3 wickets were all run outs thanks to some accurate throwing from Brett Madigan in the deep.

The C Grade took on Unley at Unley, and batted first. The visitors hit 204 with Gomer falling one short of a fifty. Rich Mellors also continued his run of good form, hitting 20 odd. (more when i hear more)

Last and by no means least, our LOD team has continued their unbeaten run, knocking off PAOC. The Valley batted first, hitting a relatively meagre score of 130, but the bowlers stepped up and rolled the home side for 111. The win ensures we hold our top spot on the ATCA ladder!

Round 4 Round Up - Tuesday 30th November

The poor turn out to the after game presentation at club on Saturday night told the story.  It was a disappointing round for the club with As, Bs and Cs all going down. Let's hope things improve this week...

The A grade started the day quite well, chasing 236 for victory we were 2/120 on a good batting deck with fast outfield. Andrew (Paddy) Harney batted well for most of the morning, before coming unstuck just before tea. Paddys innings of 85 netted him the coaches award, and also gave us a great chance of winning the game. At the tea break the plan was to just bat out the overs and a victory should have been a formality. However, a disappointing batting performance after tea saw us lose consistent wickets and we were all out for 179. The home side then batted again and put us back in the field for half an hour.  They came out swinging having already won  the game, and we managed to get 5 cheap wickets before the end of play, but all in all it was a disappointing day for the As.

The Bs hosted Grange and were always going to be up against it chasing 330 odd. Rich Mellors somehow came to be one of the opening batsmen, but even this bold move didn't help matters. A few batters made starts but none went on with it, and the home side was eventually rolled for a disappointing 156.

The C grade started the days play knowing they had already lost the week before. Modbury batted on before they declared their innings at 8/224 and went for the outright victory. A captains innings however by Aaron Dykstra ensured this wasn't going to happen. The newly promoted skipper improved on last weeks performance, hitting 68 and ensuring Modbury didn't get the outright victory they were seeking.

Round 4 Update - Monday 22nd November

A beautiful summers day on Saturday ensured all round 4 games got off without a hitch.

The A grade travelled down south to Mitchell Park and another poor decision at the coin toss saw us spend the day in the field against Sacred Heart old Collegians. Early wickets saw the home team struggling at 3/11, but a 130 run 4th wicket partnership and a century from one of their opening batsmen put them back in the game. The Valley bowling attack worked hard throughout the day and managed to bowl the home team out for 235. With a good batting deck and lightening fast outfield, the home team could perhaps have hoped for a few more, so our batting line up are more than a good chance to chase them down next week.

The B Grade hosted Grange at the Valley, and had a tough day. Unfortunate injuries to key bowlers during the day meant the Grange batting line up could get on top, and managed to pile on 6/331 from their 80 overs which including an unbeaten century. It will be a tough ask for the Bs to chase the runs down next week, but as we all know cricket is a funny game and if Glenn McGrath can hit 61 anything can happen!

The Cs hosted Modbury at St Paul's, and after batting first were bowled out for 113. Unfortunately they have already been defeated with the visitors chasing the runs down for the loss of 6 wickets.

The LOD's continued their unbeaten run by demolishing Pooraka, hitting 290 from their 40 overs and then bowling the home side out for 86! The huge score was thanks mainly to Nick O'Dell's 119 from just 79 balls! His innings, comprising of 6 sixes and countless fours was Nicks first ton for the valley, and is even more spectacular given that this was his first game back from a torn calf muscle.

The results summary for round 4 can be found here.

Round 3 was a wash out? - Monday 15th November

All the re-scheduled one day games for round three were abandoned this weekend, due to heavy rain during the week. The decision was made by Adelaide turf on Saturday morning, which was disappointing from our point of view, given that the valley deck looks so damn good at the moment and most likely would have held up fine.

Walking down the valley deck in the sunshine on Saturday morning,  it was difficult to fathom the decision, however from the ATCA's point of view, they had to base their decision from feedback from all clubs, and obviously a number of them didn't have a wicket that was considered up to scratch. An article has been posted on the ATCA website regarding the decision, and you can read it by clicking here.

The abandonment of play did however, give us a good opportunity to support our new sponsor (see below) and resulted in a good turn out , which no doubt would have been pleasing to the Highbury.

Update from Round 2 - 24th October 2004

We're at the half way point of round two and generally the news isnt too good.
The A Grade had a tough day in the field against an in form Walkerville, while calf injuries to Nick O'Dell and Gomer overshadowed an otherwise good day for the B grade. Don Haselwood took his chance and donned the whites again as 13th man, and then promptly dropped two catches in the cordon.
The C's batted first and despite an average total are a good chance next week thanks to some early wickets. The D grade game was abandoned due to their opposition not being able to field a side. Check out the results here.
